Writing is a Real Life Video Game!

img_3102Being an author used to be simply about writing (and getting a publisher), but now it’s more like being on a complicated role-playing video game! We have to achieve levels before we can move forward, and we need the public to help us!

One of the hardest thing as a writer is to get reviews. Honest ones, Amazon ones. I get so much great feedback, people write to me, talk to me, they thank me and they encourage me. They also ask me a LOT when the next one is coming out.

Instagram free 1But for some reason, they don’t appear to understand that unless they review the book at the end, on Amazon (which takes all of 30 seconds) I can’t progress much further. I still write and will continue to write, but despite nearly 4,000 of my book existing out there and a gazillion promises to write reviews, I am still WAY off target to get my 50 reviews that unlock the key to the next level… for Amazon to take me seriously, promote my books in their adds, put me on the “also bought” lists when other people buy books, and so the list goes on…

Despite selling all these books I am still in the red financially and I need to at least break even before launching the next book…
So today I have put my book out there for free again HERE, but this time for the purpose of getting people to read it and give an honest review. It’s a SHORT book (45 minutes)… so PLEEEEEEASE, I’m begging you, if you have my book please review it, if not please download today and review it, or at least send this to someone who will?? Please?

Help me to unlock this level so I can move to the next one? Help me level up with a short honest review?? Please don’t assume someone else will, most people can’t be bothered or forget… leaving me sitting here on this stupid level … stuck…Thanks! 🙂

949 Books went yesterday!

Yesterday, as many of you would know, was my FREE BOOK day. It did really well, with 949 people snapping up the opportunity! Thank you, thank you, thank you, if that was you or someone you recommended it to! Truly!

If it was you (or your friend or mate or whatever), PLEASE will you fill out the automatic review on the last page of the ebook. You don’t even need to say a lot, as long as it is honest.

WHY REVIEW? I hear you ask.

The short answer is that until I can get 50 reviews, Amazon won’t promote my book or take me seriously and I slip away into the dark abyss, never to pop up again… truly. It is no longer about selling books as much as it is about honest reviews. My friends and family can’t do it as that isn’t fair and I am not prepared to buy reviews. Swapping them is also against the rules. So I rely 100% on the general public, who choose to buy a copy of my book, to write a review at the end.

So pleeeease, pretty pleeeeeease, if you downloaded my book yesterday, when you’ve done reading it, please pop up a quick review? Thanks awfully much! xxx

Screen Shot 2017-04-23 at 4.18.29 PMIf you haven’t grabbed a copy of my book yet, then this Friday could be a good time as it is free for the day! Also for those who bought it in the first couple of months, this is a great opportunity to get an upgrade as we have added the workbook to the end for those who would like it!

And as always, a reminder that writing an honest review means the world to me (and my street cred too of course), so if you have read my book and not left a review, I would love it if you could 🙂

#WritingTip 1:

Just a short one while I’m thinking of it. I was asked about my number one writing tip and I think it is that I seek honest feedback. I totally appreciate that it can be difficult to give sometimes, but I am most grateful for honesty. Truly.

I don’t ask beta readers, coaches or friends to make me feel good, I ask them how I can improve … and I love the answers. Sometimes they can be “wrong” but they are never unhelpful and usually they are right.

Sometimes we differ on opinion or advice and sometimes it is different “grammar rules” but for the most part, they each lift my game a little (and sometimes a lot),  and it is a little like having a mirror placed in a blind spot, a light shone in a dark corner, or a lid being lifted on a whole new jar of tricks. I love that they want these things for me!

It sounds so obvious but it isn’t. And I have to say, I’d do the same for you. When I beta read for others I try to be as honest as I can, and I know it’s not easy. No one wants to hurt feelings. But do yourself a favour and #AskForHonesty.

Success Stories!

screen-shot-2017-01-24-at-5-41-32-pmEveryone loves a success story, but of course, success means different things to different people and at different times. As an author, the sheer number of books sold is one measure of success, but so are awards, accolades and “Best Seller” lists. I have hit number one on a couple of lists on the days that the book was free, and the numbers of books sold are climbing steadily.

But for me right now the greatest joy are the success stories! The feedback from complete strangers that tells me that my theory works, it makes sense, it is easy to read and put into action, and that at .99c it accessible to almost anyone. This is bringing me great joy on all kinds of levels and I would love to blog about some of these stories.

Sooooo… if you have read the book, I would love to hear from you personally… It is up to you whether you would like me to interview you on here, me to simply publish what you have to say, or whatever else works best for you. Thank you all for this feedback so far, for passing it on to others (for I don’t even know over 2,000 people so they must have got it from somewhere right?!) …

You can contact me in the comments below, or by signing on here (which will put you on the list for the non spam emails which will give details for the feedback and interviews and you can then answer me back at that address). I am so enjoying reading your stories!

Breaking The Two Thousand Barrier

img_1139I had no idea how many books would sell, but twelve days in and we got the results from Kindle yesterday. Over two thousand books have been sold so far and we haven’t even been out 2 weeks yet! Most went on the free days of course, but the idea is to get it out there and help people with anxiety to get some real tools that they can do something with, so that is a massive start. Word is trickling out there and I have already been asked to speak to a group of counselors (I will let you know when that is firmed up).

One of the hardest things about writing is wondering whether people will ever want to listen (read) what you have to say, and the feedback so far is something that I could only ever have wished for before now. I had been asked to speak about my techniques before but felt nervous and embarrassed and needed to get the words onto paper first. So I would always turn down the opportunities. But now that the book is out and receiving such rave reviews I am starting to feel a little braver. So it is time to put on my big girl pants and start saying yes! I need to get the practice and I need to get my nerves out on the smaller groups before I get to the bigger ones.

It feels so much safer to stick to my friendly wonderful following and keep my neck inside my tortoise shell where I won’t get knocked around so much, but I know that if I want to get the next book out there and this one to more people to help them, then I have no option but to stick my neck out! So thank you all for giving me the encouragement and strength to do so!

Inspiring Others?

img_1023

To be honest, I don’t feel inspirational. And I am not sure that I actually do ever inspire people, but as I find my voice and begin using it out loud I starting to hear this word used more and more often and in the context of me! That used to freak me out a lot and I am not sure that it will ever sit well with me, but I have learned to become a little more comfortable with it since I reminded myself that we are all just ordinary people really. That when ordinary people do things that other people would love to do, that makes them inspiring. I will never climb Mount Everest and nor do I have even the smallest inclination to either climb or rise above others in any kind of way. But I do want to have an impact on people who walk next to me day to day. It is these people who inspire me the most and I am pleased that I can sometimes do the same for them.

Finding my voice isn’t just about writing, it is about saying what is on my heart and being prepared to now and then be the only one who says what everyone else appears to be thinking. Not in a rude or arrogant way. But I have noticed that when people tell me that I inspire them it is never because I did anything huge, it is simply that I spoke my truth. And often, that truth that I speak appears to be the truth shared by others.

SO Close (and yet so far!)

pastedgraphic-1

Out of more than seventy thousand books that are free on any one day on Amazon Kindle, making the top 100 is a huge deal. For no other reason than that the algorythms change and Kindle push you forward. But you need to make that list. Yesterday I got to 108, how close is that! Out of all those tens of thosuands of books I came within eight of making the good list. Today is the last day of the free giveaway and we are starting to slip, so if you are any position to spread the word and a bunch of people grab it while it is free, we still could do it. But it is today or bust!

I am so blown away by your support so far and the amount of people who have taken a chance on an unknown author. 108 is pretty good! So I’d love to launch into the next phase of “just sitting there for sale” …..with a bang and a “best seller” tag 🙂

We are number one in stress managment and number one in short reads (under 90 minutes)…

You can share it on Twitter, Facebook, or simply email it to anyone.

Anxiety Champions Part 3:

screen-shot-2017-01-06-at-1-13-19-pmPart three in my series on Anxiety Champions is also someone from Survivor Season 33 in my beloved Fiji Islands. Hannah Shapiro is hilarious, but there is also a really serious side to her, and she is very openly and visibly someone who suffers from anxiety. But more than that, during the show she has a full blown panic attack and many people have remarked about or remembered her infamous lines, “I can’t feel my hands!” and “don’t let me die!”.

For me, this is such an incredibly vulnerable moment, where she totally forgets the cameras, she is utterly and completely consumed by her panic attack, and simply from the words she cries out, this is clearly extremely scary for her. This is the first time that I have witnessed a panic attack from the outside, and it was fascinating for me to watch. Having experienced hundreds of these myself, I have only seen them from the inside and I was shocked by how “normal” it looks from for an onlooker.

Hannah I think is one of those people who not so much embraces her anxiety but she is learning to live with it and does not let it hold her back. She is clearly funny, articulate and very bright, so she is in no way defined by her anxiety, but she is a wonderful ambassador for what living with anxiety looks and feels like. Thank you, Hannah!
