Author Instagram!

Screen Shot 2017-11-03 at 1.43.11 PM.pngSo I’ve heard there’s no point in Instagram for authors. But here is how it works for me:

1: First and foremost, I think of it as my shop window. People who love Instagram (and LOADS of people do!) look people up authors and people they are interested in and if there’s nothing there, then they often lose interest. So it’s a good thing to have. By having it, and it being a good representation of who I am as an author is worthwhile.

But while that remains true, who wants to spend a whole bunch of time on something like this if it’s not your thing? But Instagram is owned by Facebook and so a photo I would otherwise post to Facebook, I post to IG instead, and it goes to both instantly. So I don’t think of my IG time as IG time at all, but as HQ (Facebook Author Page) time.

I don’t get hung up on IG results and here is why:

Yesterday I posted this photo to IG:

The photo received very little attention, in fact, it was so pathetic it only acquired 3 likes and no comments!

 

But remember that as I posted it, it went directly to Facebook as well!

 

 

 

 

On Facebook, it received 9 likes and 21 comments (some of them are mine, of course, but I can only really comment in response to other things). So the singular act of uploading ONE photo (which is also WAY quicker to load to IG than to Fb by the way) in total got 12 likes and 21 comments!

I killed 2 birds with one stone, and to be fair, there are days where a photo falls through the cracks on Facebook, but gets loads of attention on IG.

I could totally just add it to Facebook only, but instead, I may as well hedge my bets right. And not a second of my precious time is lost in the process.

So if you don’t have Instagram, or you do and you are concerned it’s a waste of time, I don’t think it is if you use it simply as an upload method … 🙂

Take Control of Your NewsFeed!

Today’s questions are all about how to follow your favourite PAGES and GROUPS on Facebook. This is super important for a few of reasons:

1: If you run a page or group yourself, you want to be able to tell your followers and supporters that unless they take a few steps to make it happen, they will not see the vast majority (if any) of your page posts.

2: If you want to be a valuable tribe or village member, then it can become extremely frustrating trying to find the posts of the pages and groups you want to support unless you follow these steps.

3: If you want to post fabulous things to your page without constantly going on about yourself, then following the steps below will ensure that you always have a newsfeed filled with the PAGES that you love. Then all you have to do is share a few of them, and your own page becomes full and active quite quickly.

FIRST STEP:

Let’s say you belong to the group ONE STOP FICTION LAUNCH TEAMS. It is a private group, so it isn’t a space for “sharing” but it is where your tribe resides, and where you get fabulous tips most days. It is also a space where you can ask questions about your book launch or street team.

If you open this group on your computer and hover over the word “Notifications” under the starfish, you need to click All Posts. This means that all posts will appear in your notifications and your newsfeed.

STEP TWO:

Just say you’ve been away for a few days and your notifications are so full it’s hard to work through them. It can be easier to click on the 3 dots to the right of the “Share” button and click on “Pin to shorcuts.

When you do this, One Stop Fiction Launch Teams will appear on the left of your homepage and newsfeed, and it even appears on the left when you are on any other profile, page, or group, under the word Shortcuts. You can see I added it here so instead of Chronic Readers being on the top, OSFLTs is now on top.

These two steps can be applied to any group or page you belong to… The first step isn’t totally foolproof so I highly recommend the second step over and above the first.

I apply these steps to ALL the pages and groups that I need to see all the time!

 

 

 

STEP THREE: “See first”

If you click on the very right-hand side of the top blue bar of your screen, there is a down arrow. The third from the bottom option says “News Feed Preferences”. If you click on that, this large box will pop up:

The first option, with the blue star/circle, allows you to prioritise your newsfeed. So click on it, and another box will pop up showing everything and everyone you follow.

This option not only assures that every post from that site/profile/group/page will pop up in your newsfeed, but it will appear first, at the top of your newsfeed every time you open it! You can see that I follow all these great pages, but I want to make sure that I don’t miss posts from Beyond Your Past Coaching. This is a business that I am passionate about and believe in, so I am a brand ambassador for Matt Pappas and everything he is doing. So I have given him a blue star, which means his page will appear first on my newsfeed every time I open it!

The catch here is you only have a maximum of about 20 “see first” places (that number can and does change). So I have chosen the 6 brands for whom I am an ambassador, 10 pages which post things that I love to share because they are fun, interesting, a good representation of my own brand, and 4 others.

If you want to be the best Brand Ambassador you can be, and want your own followers and fans to do the same, then these easy steps are a great place to start and to organise your online experience 🙂

PS: On my phone, it looked like this:

The first screenshot I have opened to the author Page Jennifer Peacock-Smith, then I clicked on the “Following” button in blue next to the Liked button. It opened to the second screenshot where I had 3 options, “unfollow” “default” and “see first”. I turned the “get notifications” on, then I made “see first” turn blue, and then I clicked on “edit notifications” which opened me to the third screenshot which has a whole bunch of options. I clicked yes to the first three, and no to the last 2 which would pretty much undo all the good work if they were on :p

Tribe Talk 001

Screen Shot 2017-10-29 at 8.15.18 AMIn case you’ve missed it, I’m passionate about tribes, and working within and through them. So I thought I’d do a series on how they work for me, and with November being Author Blitz month for me, I think it’s a great place to start.

So I spent this morning explaining a little bit about social media, how I use it, and its role in tribes and villages.

In a nutshell, it explains the following:

•It explains villages and tribes…

•How we are just millions of dots randomly spread everywhere. Nowhere near the highways.

•That there are virtual highways, and if we organize ourselves well, we can place ourselves along them.

•If we jostle, shout & push, we will get nowhere, but if we collaborate we will more likely find a place.

•But we tend to congregate now in bunches of our own, selling to each other and getting nowhere.

•Instead of a butcher, a baker & a seamstress, we are a row of authors, or a row of bloggers/fitness instructors/artist/etc. Our numbers aren’t putting us on the highways!

•Tribes, villages & Shopping centers work for a reason and we need to go back to them… But lets first look at the shop itself.

•Here is what they look like:

•They are slightly different depending on what kind of shop they are. Coffee shops are all front and barely any back. Dry Cleaners are all back and hardly any front. This is more than just space, it is also atmosphere and wanting to be there. Compare Starbucks front where it is all about the experience to dry cleaners who are notoriously grumpy.

•Do you simply provide a service regardless of how grumpy you are or do you need to draw customers in?

•This can feel overwhelming, but it needn’t be. This is what works for me:

◦I understand how these different parts work and why. I don’t waste time trying to make any of them be something they aren’t.

◦I have a strategy so that as I am working on each piece of the puzzle I am not stressing about the rest!

◦The pieces speak to each other! (e.g.: IG automatically posts to Fb, Blogs to Twitter and Fb etc)

◦Context is something you’ll hear me talk about a lot. I don’t try to do all things all the time. I spend time in each context and set it up well. No one puts posters on lamp posts every day, but now and then they pop out and check/replace them …. etc.

•We all belong to a number of villages. In the olden days we belonged to one and one only. It was physical, but it was also spiritual, educational, emotional, everything. But then people started moving to the city where they could choose their village and belong to a few. Study in one, live in another, work in a third and even worship in a fourth. It is a good thing for the most part but can also be lonely, fickle, & unreliable. The option of leaving means these villages can be unstable.

•A baker does not set up shop in a town of bakers. He sets up shop in a town with NO bakers… and lots of hungry people! In the olden days a bad baker who was the only baker still thrived. Now one has to be the best baker or people move on. And setting up against other bakers is asking for disaster.

•People in villages walk past our shops if they are shopping in other places. We need to belong to communities or tribes that will see our shop windows or our lamp posts when they are “surfing” their High Street. The villages/tribes that I belong to are:

◦My health community

◦Church

◦Expat

◦Neighbours

◦Old school buddies

◦Art associates

•But I need to reach beyond them. I need to have those in my community share my stuff so that their tribes can also see my stuff. And people hitting “like” through their newsfeed is not support that goes beyond them-and-me. Just last week I tagged a friend to show her a post she really needed to see as it was about her. She “liked” my comment but still did not take the action she needed to take (she didn’t even read it!). Click farms and Like farms have killed “like” as a support measure. We need “Comment Ambassadors” who aren’t bakers, to comment and share our content so that their tribes see it, more of my tribes see it, and those people passing by can see that it has a level of earthly worth.

•I’ll do another video on what this looks like and how to get it as soon as I can, as this is getting a bit long… so comment below as many questions as you like….

•THERE ARE SOME BASICS HOWEVER:

•1: If people can’t find me at all, or they do and I have nothing to show, they will keep on walking past. You can’t change that fact.

•2: I need my shop fronts & windows to be active, clean, inviting, inspirational, warm, welcoming, and interesting.

Author Stage or Author Platform

Many people who are new to writing are doing exactly what we are all advised to do: Build an online presence, an online platform, and get the word out there. We have to sell ourselves, and we have to sell our books. But the biggest question I get asked over and over again is how do I get people to come to me and listen to what I have to say. This is the hardest part in some ways, but in other ways, I think it is actually the easiest, but you do need a few key ingredients: Humility, Patience, and Community are just three of them but believe me, you can’t get far without ALL of them. Here is why:

The first mistake we make is to go out, buy the wood and build ourselves a little stage in our back yard. We stand on it and wait for the crowds to come. It is heart-wrenching when no one turns up! So we fork out the cash for advertising, we stick posters on the lamp posts, and we tell all our friends. Some of them come, but still, there is no crowd and few of our books sell. It feels so unfair.

The problem is that many of us build a stage before we build a platform. Twitter, Pinterest, and Facebook are all great tools, but they are just that, they are tools. They are the loudspeakers and the flyers and the billboards. But the problem is that they are lost in millions upon millions of almost identical loudspeakers, flyers, and billboards. At one end we have a FABULOUS product (aren’t all of our books going to be the next best seller?), and at the other end we have the advertising, but there is nothing in between. There is nothing to connect us and make us stand out. Even our STUNNING front cover is lost among thousands of other stunning covers!

So in comes humility and patience. Humility to ask someone else if we can perhaps have a seat at their table, to get to know them, and to one day accept a teeny corner of their stage. Over and over people tell me that they don’t have the time to meet people, to get to know them before they ask for help, or even then, that they don’t want to stand on someone else’s stage! They want to stand on their own stage. I get that. We all want our own stage to shine, but we can’t force people to come or to buy.

Another option perhaps is to build your own stage by all means, but for the first season, don’t stand on it other than to introduce our guests. Invite others to come and speak on it instead. Bring in people who you know others would love to hear. It is still your stage. But if you spend a season being the host, welcoming people, giving others a voice and a place to stand, then after a while, when people love and trust you, they will turn to you and ask you ” do you also write? I love to hear your voice at the beginning of each show, I would love to hear what else you have to say”.

These things both take time, they both take humility, and they take a whole lot of “paying it forward”. I am not saying it is easy, but for me, it is actually a whole lot easier than embarrassingly standing on a soap box and shouting “PLEASE BUY MY BOOK!” at the top of my lungs all day, every day.

We need to build an online presence and an online platform, but we must be a little careful of confusing it with simply building a stage…

Glossary of Facebook Terms:

Here are the “Glossary of terms” for your Facebook Page.

Now that I am unpacking and explaining Facebook, I am actually getting a little annoyed with them as I feel that there is way too much duplication of terms and words. Last time we struggled with the issue between our own private Facebook account which the general public refers to as “my Facebook Page” and yet when you create a Facebook Page for a cause or a product or your community, that is what Facebook call a Facebook Page.

Now as I look at the screen shot above from my own FbPAGE, the third word down on the left is HOME which is the exact word that Facebook uses for our Newsfeed, which is a different thing entirely! So I hope that I can get around this and not confuse you in the process…

Facebook Words:

  • HOME (personal account): Ugh, When you are on your personal account OR on your open FbPAGE and you click the Home button that is on the blue bar across the top of your page, near the right, you will always go to your personal Newsfeed. Why they don’t just call it a Newsfeed is beyond me, although this is where you can find all kinds of things down the left which aren’t visible when you are on your Timeline. I am pointing this out because when you are working on your FbPAGE, the blue bar across the top remains the same, it does not change to your PAGE, it remains as your profile. o don’t confuse this Home with the one mentioned above on your PAGE.screen-shot-2016-10-26-at-12-33-16-pm
  • HOME (FbPAGE): I am now referring again to the first picture that I put up at the very top of this post, when you click on this Home, it takes you to the Timeline of your FbPAGE (not personal account).
  • Personal Timeline or User Profile: This is for your personal page only. AT any time when you click on your own name on the blue bar (I would click on Jennifer there, next to the word Home), it takes me to my own personal Timeline. This is the page that is “me”, what I or others that I allow, post there.
  • Page Name: Under my profile picture at the very top you can see my Page Name “Jennifer Peacock-Smith”. It is my writing name, my author name, but if this page was a business or a band, the Page Name would be the name of your choosing. Mine is my personal name because I am an author but yours might be your stage name, business name, WordPress blog name …whatever you choose.
  • Username: Private Accounts & Profiles are in general simply your own name. There are thousands of John Smiths in the world and all of them can have Facebook Page called John Smith (have fun finding YOUR John Smith) but in many ways it means that you can have a level of secrecy by being one of thousands if you don’t want everyone under the sun to find you. But if you have a FbPAGE, you are able to have a unique Username as well. My FbPAGE has me as my full name (Jennifer Peacock-Smith), and technically I could be one of many, but my username is @JPeaSmith, which is unique. If you want to find my page and know my username, I am easy to find.
  • Tag (& Tagging). This has been a part of Facebook for a long time, and it is a way to alert someone that you are posting about them, or bringing their attention to something that you are including them in. All you used to have to do is use the @ followed by someone’s Facebook name and a link would automatically connect and alert both them and their friends. It has gone under some changes in the last few years and they are important to note if you want to use them: The first is that you no longer use the @ to tag someone, you simply start typing their name and the option of tagging them appears which you can click on or ignore. The second change however is only relevant to Usernames which are only used on pages. If you want to tag me personally to your post, then you just do what I said in number 1, however if you want to tag my FbPAGE, then using my NAME (even the name of my page) won’t work, but using my Username (which has a @ in it already) works.
  • Followers: As explained last week, a private Facebook account has friends only. This means that all connections go both ways. But FbPAGEs only have followers. These are the people who “like” your page, and when they do so, they become a follower of your page. Your page will appear on their newsfeed and they will feel that they are part of the community that is interested in you. If you want to get your name, your business, your blog out there, you need people to follow you. If you link your FbPAGE to your blog to automatically post each time you blog, then you are now tapping into the Facebook community who might otherwise not know about your blog…

Why Have Social Media?

All of us have different reasons to having any kind of social media and for me it is to promote my writing (blogging and upcoming books on my personal growth/abuse story) and my art that I do for therapy and enjoyment.

A lot of people have asked me since last week why they should bother with Social Media. The simple answers are that they are the way that people are communicating out there these days. If you don’t want to live under a rock forever, then at some level these can truly add to your life if you do them well and simply. Secondly, they create what is known as your “online presence” and if you write, blog, create, build, have your own business of any kind, then any forum that you are publicly a part of, can be your greatest advertising tool; for free. Now that I am on Twitter and Instagram I rarely pass a shop, a cafe, a plumber or a restaurant without seeing their social media connections posted in a corner somewhere. Like it or not, it is the way of the future.

It can also be a lot of fun. I was in a cafe a month or so ago when the heaven’s opened up and not only was there a huge and sudden downpour, but a massive gust of wind. The whole thing lasted less than ten minutes but people raced in from outside and even inside water was pouring in through air vents and we were all desperately trying to get out of the way of water blowing in. It was quite fun even though it was a hassle and when I posted a pic on Instagram the next day it was fun seeing the pics that others had taken too, all tagging this little cafe. It was a good moment for them and the whole atmosphere of the stories and photos made a good show of community and I am sure was a free bit of advertising for that establishment.

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-2-29-21-pmOne of the biggest questions that I get asked about WordPress is how to get our blogs out there to be read and heard and talked about. Simply put, social media is the way to go. If you open your WordPress account and hover over the top left corner, a black box will pop down like this.

Right down near the bottom is the word “Sharing”. If you click on that you will open your sharing options. These sharing options are a “once off” effort that you don’t have to think about again. At the bottom of my post here you can see buttons that people can share this on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc. This allows others to share your post even if you don’t have any social media. Here you can very quickly and easily add buttons to your blogs

 

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-2-33-41-pmOn the other hand, if you want to automatically share your blog post with others, then when you are writing your post, you simply click on the downward arrow to the right of “Sharing”. This is a a different kind sharing. This is your connection to automatically share your post on which ever social media YOU want to share it with.

So for example, when I press “Publish” when I have finished writing this post, I have connected to both my Facebook Page and my Twitter accounts (both). So I don’t even have to open either platform and nor do I have to click anything. This box has a button to connect (or disconnect) any social media you have which from then whenever I blog, I Tweet and Facebook at the same time! There is even a box to include a few words of your choice, and if you don’t customise the message that is fine too because it will just use your blog heading🙂

Sometimes you might write a post that you don’t want to share on Twitter, you just click on the box and as it shows up everything that it is going to do, all you have to do is un”tick” the box you don’t want it to go to, and next time it will revert to sending to all your social media platforms.

Learning Twitter:

So today we are going to go through the basics of getting a Twitter account. For me this was the most daunting of all social media and I wish that I knew beforehand that it shouldn’t be. For me I had thought that Facebook was where it was all at and that Twitter was for all the cool beautiful people who have frightened me my whole life. I thought that I would find myself back in school not being good enough or trendy enough or getting squashed and lost under the tide of popularity. I had even decided long ago that Twitter would be a space that I would never go to. So not only am I new to all this, but 2 months ago I was petrified of Twitter and swore that I would never go there… haha..

Now I am exactly 4 months in, have a decent following for such a newbie and I actually enjoy it more than any of the other platforms. But it is completely different to anything else and I had to learn from scratch. I did a ton of research and I played for hours and hours on end before I really did anything.

Like with the other platforms of social media, I decided to be the tortoise not the hare and now I feel like I am very much winning even though I still have so much to learn. So today like yesterday with Facebook, all we are going to do is set you up, but with one major difference. With your FbPage you can sit there quietly and do what you like while you build your page with no down side to staying below the radar. With Twitter on the hand, as soon as you open an account, very soon you will have people following you… so it is very tempting to start getting super involved. It is extremely tempting to think that flying under the radar will be costly. Well that isn’t the case at all. Just like with Facebook, there is nothing but up side to flying low for the first few weeks. Most people start hard and then peter off… we are going to be the tortoise here remember🙂

Remember I explained that our private FbAccounts are a two way valve; you see all your friends and they see you, but that a FbPage is a one way valve only; People can like you but you can’t see them?

Well Twitter is different again, like FbPage it is not a two way valve, but it is not reciprocal like FbAccount either. It is TWO one way valves. In other words, to use the example from yesterday, if Fred wants a personal Twitter account then he would open one and anyone who finds him can follow him. If he wants a PopStar account then he has to open a second account under the name PopStar. They are not linked and they have nothing to do with each other. Everyone can see both, and PopStar can follow people (FbPage can’t), and people can follow PopStar.

If you follow Fred or PopStar (or both), they are under no obligation to follow you back. However, if you follow them, it can be temping to be hurt when they don’t follow you back. And when someone follows you, it can be just as tempting to feel obligated to follow them, so that you don’t leave them feeling hurt. After “taking it slow”, the second strongest advice that I can give is to not feel obligated to follow everyone. Check them out, see what they are doing, and follow them for sure, but if you are not sure about fake accounts and how to tell the difference then wait a while.

Once you set up your Twitter account, please resist this temptation to follow everyone who follows you as there are people with computer programs who are constantly looking for new accounts in the hope of these new accounts following them back. We will go into detail about these accounts once you know a little bit more about what is going on but for now either ignore them completely or if you know how to, you can block them. There will also be people who are hoping that you are a man, and who will follow you under the pretence of being a sexy half naked large breasted girl. These accounts are usually fake and if they are real then they are usually dodgy in some other way. Just know that they can’t do you any harm if you ignore or block them, and should you do so, the logarithms looking for easy targets will move on and you will get less and less of this. But if you give in and follow them back, then you will get more and more of them.

To start a Twitter account simply look up Twitter.com on your computer browser and at the top right corner you will have the option to either sign up or log in. Simply click on sign up.

Next you will come to a screen where you can fill in your really basic details:

Again it will be quite obvious what to do over the next few screens, and your Profile won’t look dissimilar to your Fb page. I am reminding you again that it is important not to panic now. No one is looking at you, you can’t go far wrong. Learning Facebook:

So today we are going to go through the basics of having a Facebook PAGE. This is super confusing because those of you who have Fb already will know that most people refer to their Fb accounts as their Fb page. So I need to start off by being very clear that when I talk about a Fb PAGE I am talking about what they call a public page. The difference is this:

I have a private Fb account (FbAccount). This is me: Jen Smith (please don’t send me a Friend Request, as this is my private account and I don’t accept requests from anyone but close family). Also please don’t send requests to each other either, as during this process of setting up Facebook Pages it will add to the confusion.

This on the other hand is my Fb PAGE (FbPage): Jennifer Peacock-Smith. You are very welcome to “like” it, and in fact please do so that you can follow along as all the posts here will be posted there. As you each build a page I will “like” yours as well, and I encourage you to “like” each others.

If you compare the two, the one that is privately me (FbAccount) looks very different to the one that is publicly me (FbPage). The major difference is that for the FbAccount we need to be mutual friends to follow each other. We send Friend Requests and upon acceptance we can see each other clearly.

For the FbPage on the other hand the communication is one way. If you “like” me, you are following me, you can see everything that I post, and I will show up on your newsfeed if you want me to. But I can’t see YOU and your private account in any way shape or form.

Say for example I am a singer  and “PopStar” is my stage name, but my real name is Fred. I can’t have a FbPage for PopStar without having a FbAccount for Fred. My  Fred Facebook can have friends it is the two way valve and everyone who can me, I can see too. As Fred I save this for my family and close friends that I trust. But PopStar is my public a FbPage and 3 million people follow me there. They click “like” on his page and they are my fans. I have no obligation to follow them at all, because it is a one way valve. When they follow me they have no expectations of me following them back because my FbPage can’t follow people. I hope that that makes sense…

So here is how you do it. To set up a Fb Page,

  • Go into your Facebook on your computer and click HOME at the top of your screen. This is your newsfeed as usual.
  • To the left you will see this: screen-shot-2016-10-15-at-11-47-32-am (click on Create Page).
  • You will then see this box pop up: screen-shot-2016-10-15-at-11-48-41-am
  • You then need to click which ever box applies to you. I am a Writer, so I clicked on Artist, Band or Public Page. This is what happened when I clicked on it: screen-shot-2016-10-15-at-11-50-03-am
  • You now need to choose a category. I chose Writer for my Page, but I also have an Artist page for my artwork that I do with my friend Julie, which I named accordingly. So with your single Fb Account you can have a number of different Pages, but for now we are going to stick to one so that we don’t all get confused.
  • I can’t go any further in the process myself as I am not setting up an account. But from here on in it is quite simple. Follow the prompts slowly and read everything on each page.
  • Soon you will find that your Fb Page is active and the bare bones are set up.

Remember that this is all foundations so you don’t have to even add any pictures yet, and you can change the name later. Check out my and other FbPages and see what you like and dislike. Social Media Lessons 01:

Welcome to covering all things new when starting social media. All of us have different reasons to having any kind of social media and for me it is to promote my writing (blogging and eventual book on my personal growth/abuse story) and my art that I do for therapy and enjoyment and sometime sell.

The first thing that I want to say is that for me this was extremely overwhelming, and I did it alone, so please don’t think that I don’t get anxious or extremely frustrated. I think that we all look at everyone else doing this and think that they do it so easily. But the reality is that most don’t. There are some amazing, talented incredible people out there on social media, but they make up a small minority of what you see. So as you go forward on this journey please remember a bunch of things:

  • Many of these people who appear to do well have been doing it for a long time, and all of them struggled at the beginning.
  • All of them would have made many mistakes along the way and you will too. Please don’t get stressed when you make them, I will be here for you at each step of the way and no one will notice almost all of your mistakes (and the ones that they do see, are fixable).
  • Many of them look like they have a following but they are mostly friends and family and many people on social media have built up big accounts but then leave them sitting there.
  • Nothing can’t be changed or fixed.

My number one advice going forward is that you take it slow. If you make a major mistake (sorry, change that to WHEN you make a major mistake), and only a dozen of us here see it, then it has little to no impact going forward. But if you race ahead and get a bunch of follows and make a mistake and lose a bunch of them, then you need to start again. So:

  • Foundations First! Over the next few weeks we will be building your social media platforms, but not telling everyone you know about them. For the first week at least, have no more than one or two people following you, and if it is me and anyone else who is part of this, then we can see each other and help each other. Don’t add anyone else at this point. We will be working around getting you completely comfortable with your tiny network
  • Then the structure: Once you have opened accounts and you have only a small handful of connections, we can work on building each platform so that it works for you. There is so much information out there it is scary, so we will be working around getting you completely comfortable with your own site, how you decorate it, what you would like to aim it at, what your audience will be and how to dress it up.

Over the past few days I have been asked for help with setting up or understanding social media. I am not claiming to be an expert, and I haven’t been doing this long, but I feel that firstly I must be doing something right that people are trusting me and asking me for help, and secondly I also know that I am in a once off situation where I am no longer a complete novice at this yet am still pretty new myself. So I have not forgotten how overwhelming this process can be, and how hard it is to find very basic help.

So many people helped me with my starting out journey, hence I am happy to do the same thing here, but even more than that I believe that if I spend the time and effort over the next 6 weeks in sharing with you what I have learnt, for free, to anyone who wants the help, then I will hopefully make your journey a little easier than mine was, and why not pay if forward right?

Over the next few weeks I will write a few posts that cover the setting up and navigating of a handful of social media platforms, how to connect and promote your agenda on them, the pitfalls to watch out for, and the how to use them to suit your needs.

We will look at:

  • Social Media (SM) in a general sense and WordPress Blogs.
  • Facebook (Fb)
  • Twitter (Tw)
  • Instagram (IG)

There are a number of people who’s blogs and instructions and advice I found enormously helpful once I was a few steps in, so as I get to the end of this I will find those again and point you in their direction, so that you can move forward as far as you like at the end.

And don’t worry, I won’t drop you at the end of this program, I will still be here on this blog at the end and we keep going if there are enough of you interested.
